Energy management enhanced by generative AI

ABB has announced the integration of its generative artificial intelligence solution, ABB Ability™ Industrial Knowledge Vault (IKV), into the ABB Ability™ Energy Management System (EMS). This enhancement introduces a conversational interface that allows users to access energy performance and sustainability indicators through natural language queries, complementing the system’s existing capabilities for monitoring, analytics, and reporting.

Simplified access to energy data
With the IKV copilot integrated into EMS, operators, energy managers, and sustainability teams can directly query data related to energy consumption, emissions factors, operating costs, and the performance of critical assets.

This approach eliminates the need to navigate multiple dashboards or handle complex data processes. Access to information becomes faster while maintaining the transparency and rigor required in industrial environments.

Addressing energy and operational challenges
This innovation responds to current industrial challenges, including rising energy costs, increasing system complexity, and growing sustainability requirements. In industries such as metals, pulp and paper, cement, and mining—where energy represents a significant share of operating costs—faster access to reliable insights supports more responsive and efficient decision-making.

ABB selected EMS as the integration platform due to the maturity and robustness of its data model, which enables the generation of structured, reliable insights from plant-level energy data.

From reactive to proactive operations
The EMS copilot enables operational teams to transition from reactive to proactive management. By analyzing real-time and historical data, it identifies opportunities to improve energy performance and reduce emissions that were previously difficult to detect.

The conversational interface also broadens access to energy insights beyond specialists, allowing a wider range of stakeholders to obtain relevant information for decision-making.

Capturing and leveraging industrial knowledge
ABB Ability™ Industrial Knowledge Vault is designed to centralize and preserve industrial expertise in the form of procedures, best practices, and guided workflows. Its integration into EMS connects operational data with domain knowledge in a unified environment.

Applied to energy management, this approach supports safer, more efficient, and more sustainable plant operations, while also facilitating knowledge transfer within industrial organizations.

With this integration, ABB strengthens the role of artificial intelligence in transforming industrial energy systems by combining data, expertise, and accessibility to enable faster and more informed decisions.
