Compact Voltage-Independent Circuit Breakers for High-Capacity Industrial Distribution

The DS301C M is a compact Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent protection (RCBO) designed to integrate three distinct safety functions—overcurrent, short-circuit, and residual fault protection — into a 17.6 mm form factor. This technical development targets high-density electrical distributions in the automotive data ecosystem, large-scale commercial buildings, and industrial facilities where cabinet space is a primary engineering constraint.

Space Optimization and Technical Specifications
At the Light + Building 2026 trade fair in Frankfurt, held from March 8 to 13, 2026, the device demonstrated a 50 percent reduction in spatial requirements compared to conventional RCCB and MCB combinations. While standard 10kA protection typically requires two or three module widths, the DS301C M maintains a 17.6 mm width, identical to a standard single-pole Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB).

This reduction in footprint allows for the integration of additional circuits or auxiliary components, such as energy meters and monitoring hardware, within existing DIN rail architectures. For retrofitting projects, this density enables the upgrade of protection levels without requiring the replacement of established distribution boards or the expansion of the digital supply chain infrastructure.

Functional Reliability and Voltage Independence
The DS301C M utilizes an electromechanical, voltage-independent design. This mechanism ensures that the device remains capable of tripping during a residual current fault even if the primary supply voltage is unstable or completely interrupted. By isolating only the specific branch experiencing a fault, the RCBO prevents the "nuisance tripping" of entire sections, which is critical for maintaining uptime in industrial production lines and data centers.

Technical coordination with ABB’s broader DIN rail portfolio allows the DS301C M to function as a component of larger sub-distribution systems. It is rated for a 10kA short-circuit breaking capacity, a standard requirement for demanding commercial environments where high potential fault currents are present.Material Efficiency and Manufacturing StandardsThe hardware is produced at the ABB facility in Santa Palomba, Italy. This site operates under a "Zero Waste to Landfill" protocol and the company’s internal Mission to Zero program. The compact architecture contributes to sustainability metrics by reducing the total volume of raw materials — including copper, plastics, and silver-plated contacts — required per circuit protected.

The device serves as a specialized solution for engineers tasked with balancing high-capacity fault protection with the physical limitations of modern electrical enclosures.
