Elsner Elektronik Expands KNX Hotel Room Controls

Hotels using KNX-based building automation increasingly require integrated room status signaling that connects guest inputs with staff workflows. Elsner Elektronik has introduced the KNX eTR DND/MUR Switch and KNX eTR DND/MUR Signal/Bell, extending its eTR series with components designed specifically for guest room management in the hospitality sector.

Guest status directly linked to the KNX building bus
In hotel environments, “Do Not Disturb” (DND) and “Make Up Room” (MUR) requests are typically handled via standalone door panels or proprietary systems. The new eTR DND/MUR Switch integrates this function directly into the KNX building bus, allowing service status changes to be transmitted over the same infrastructure used for lighting, HVAC and shading control.

Installed inside the guest room, the touch-sensitive glass panel enables occupants to select DND or MUR. The selected status is communicated via KNX telegrams to a corridor-mounted unit, the KNX eTR DND/MUR Signal/Bell, where it is visually indicated. The corridor device also incorporates a bell function for the guest area, consolidating signaling and room communication within the same KNX architecture.

By embedding these functions into the broader building automation network, hotel operators can centralize room status monitoring and integrate it with housekeeping workflows or building management systems.

Two devices, extended functionality within the eTR platform
Both components belong to the existing eTR series and feature glass fronts available in black or white, allowing consistent integration with other eTR push buttons and room controllers. Beyond service signaling, the devices provide additional technical capabilities relevant to a digital supply chain of building data within hospitality properties.

The eTR DND/MUR units include:
  • An integrated temperature sensor
  • Two inputs for binary contacts or external temperature sensors
  • Freely configurable logic functions (AND/OR) within the KNX application
These functions enable the devices to participate in broader automation scenarios. For example, the integrated temperature sensor can support room climate control strategies, while binary inputs may connect to window contacts for energy management logic. Logical functions allow local condition-based control without requiring additional external KNX logic modules.

Positioning within hotel automation systems
By introducing a dedicated DND/MUR solution for KNX installations, Elsner Elektronik is addressing a specific operational requirement in hotel projects where standardized bus-based automation is already deployed. Unlike isolated signaling panels, the eTR components operate natively within KNX, reducing the need for separate cabling or parallel control systems.

This approach supports system integrators and hotel operators seeking unified guest room management within a single automation framework. The result is tighter integration between guest requests, corridor indication and building-level control functions, aligned with established KNX standards for interoperable building automation.
