Copeland Launches Transcritical CO2 Scroll Compressor

Copeland, a global leader in compression technologies and controls solutions, has introduced its transcritical CO₂ scroll compressor featuring dynamic vapor injection (DVI) technology to the North American market. This advancement marks a significant step toward enhanced flexibility, scalability, and sustainability for distributed CO₂ refrigeration systems across both new installations and remodels.

Driven by rising regulatory requirements, emissions reduction targets, and the shift to low-GWP natural refrigerants, food retailers are rapidly adopting CO₂-based refrigeration architectures. Industry data reflects this momentum: ATMOsphere reports supermarket CO₂ system penetration in North America has reached 5.8 percent—up from 4.1 percent the previous year—with approximately 4,100 stores using transcritical CO₂ systems as of December 2024, a 40 percent year-over-year increase.

Leveraging its integrated system design approach, Copeland’s new scroll compressor strengthens its comprehensive CO₂ portfolio, which includes transcritical and subcritical semi-hermetic compressors, subcritical scrolls, advanced controls, monitoring solutions, variable frequency drives, and system components that together support fully integrated CO₂ booster systems. The new models—available in fixed and variable speed—incorporate DVI technology across the line.

The dynamic vapor injection process improves system efficiency by digesting high-pressure vapor directly within the compression cycle. This eliminates the need for parallel compression to handle flash tank vapor, simplifying system architecture while reducing applied costs and boosting performance in any climate. The innovation addresses design challenges commonly associated with larger CO₂ systems, offering efficient and reliable booster refrigeration.

By reducing system complexity, Copeland’s transcritical CO₂ scroll technology helps lower total cost of ownership through easier installation, simplified piping, fewer components, and smaller, lighter compressor racks. The streamlined design enhances system reliability and minimizes downtime, ultimately reducing maintenance costs for food retail operators.
