In 2024, Germany introduced the new §14a EnWG regulation as part of the German Energy Industry Act aimed at managing grid stability and flexibility amid growing renewable integration. This requires all energy-consuming assets in homes above 4.2kW – including residential batteries, heat pumps, and EV chargers – to be remote-controllable by grid operators, so that they can temporarily reduce the power output or consumption of these devices during potential grid overloads. In return for making their devices controllable, consumers benefit from reduced grid fees.
The SolarEdge ONE Controller will enable German residential installers to commission solar and storage systems that can integrate with the home’s Smart Meter system (iMSys) in-line with regulatory requirements. Tested by EEBUS e.V. in its Living Lab in Cologne, the ONE Controller complies with the use cases required by §14a EnWG.
Christian Carraro, General Manager Europe, SolarEdge, comments: “The ONE Controller offers residential installers in Germany a simple solution to a complex regulatory challenge, opening the market to smart integration of controllable loads. Grid Security Management requirements from grid operators are fulfilled, while homeowners can benefit from reduced energy bills through smarter energy management – a win-win for all.”
Powering more of the home’s heaviest loads with optimized solar energy
The ONE Controller also serves as an interface for the SolarEdge Home ecosystem with industry-leading third-party EV chargers, such as specific models from ABB, MENNEKES and Wallbox, and heat pumps from Vaillant. Other heat pumps can be controlled through SG-ready compatibility**. For homeowners with compatible devices, this means more of the home‘s heaviest energy loads can be powered with solar, helping them achieve faster ROI. Features include the ability to charge loads with excess PV, as well as manual start/stop and smart scheduling to extend battery activity during power outages.
Further technology innovation for the residential market
At Intersolar, SolarEdge will also present further developments in its next-generation solar + storage solution for single and three-phase applications, showcasing the first Alpha sites to demonstrate its highly modular design, scalable battery capacity and significant installation advantages.
The company will also showcase a new Power Optimizer solution, S650A, to address smaller and more complex PV installations in Europe.
Carraro concludes: “Amidst an uncertain economic climate, we remain laser-focused on delivering added-value through technological innovation – whether that’s improving the economics of solar today or helping to futureproof our customers as the energy landscape shifts towards more dynamic electricity tariffs.”
Residential solar installers attending Intersolar 2025 can find more information on the ONE Controller on SolarEdge’s booth (Stand 110, Hall B4).
