Elsner lets you Water your garden smartly

Having your own garden is more popular than ever. Whether it's a cottage garden, an exquisite miniature landscape, a playground or home-grown vegetables, the trend towards "outdoor living" continues. Hot summers in recent years have shown that many areas and plant species need to be watered regularly.

However, not everyone can or wants to drag cans through the garden or pull the hose across the lawn every morning and evening. And even the most ambitious gardener has the problem that during the summer holidays the splendour of the plants dries up. No matter whether it's expensively bought trees or lovingly home-grown tomatoes – just a few days' absence can destroy the investment of money and effort.

Water regularly and sufficiently
Automatic irrigation is a lifesaver for the garden and the plants in the greenhouse at this time. The Jardana irrigation system from Elsner Elektronik is suitable for all types of irrigation, from drip irrigation of vegetables to lawn sprinklers. With the four valves of Jardana, different watering zones are realised. Four watering timers with individual durations can be set for each zone. This makes it possible to water in the morning and/or evening and, in the case of heavy soils, to give the water in portions so that it is better absorbed by the soil. Programmed water-free days stimulate root growth.

With soil moisture sensors, watering is even better adapted to the needs of the plants. At the same time, water is saved because a watering timer only starts when the soil is dry and stops immediately when it is moist enough. This fulfils another important requirement: To deal sensitively with the precious resource of water. A good means for sustainable gardening is to collect rainwater and distribute it in a targeted manner via the Jardana irrigation system. When using rainwater tanks, however, attention must be paid to the water pressure. While the valves of the Jardana can cope with 1.5 bar, lawn sprinklers need 2 or even 4 bar. A pump is often used for support here.

Generally, one sensor per irrigation zone is buried in the soil, where the roots of the plants are located. The sensor lines are connected to the irrigation system. When determining the threshold values "dry – irrigate in the next time window" and "moist enough – stop or suspend irrigation immediately", observation and testing are the most helpful. How long and how much the soil should dry out and how often and how much watering should be done depends on the preferences of the plants, the soil conditions and the location.

By the way, professionals save water by using ground-covering plants and mulch when landscaping. This protects against drying out and thus requires less frequent and more moderate watering. For gardens with uniform planting or if only the lawn is to be watered, a single soil moisture sensor may be sufficient. Placed outside the watering area, it reports when the soil has been soaked by rain, for example, and does not need watering.

Simple operation via app
All watering settings are easily set via the Jardana app on the smartphone. The app and the irrigation system communicate via WLAN. Since Jardana can generate its own WLAN, the system is independent and also suitable for extensive gardens or remote properties. Alternatively, the existing home WLAN can simply be used.

The smartphone can then be used not only to monitor whether watering is currently taking place and what the soil conditions are like. The current watering can also be extended, or the automatic watering can be blocked. werden. So, the garden party or the round of games on the lawn is not disturbed. A simple tap of the finger and the watering is suspended.

By connecting to the home WLAN, the garden can also be watered while on the move. After setting up a secure VPN connection, the app can be used to intervene from anywhere, even while on holiday.

Integrating Jardana into KNX smart homes
The irrigation system becomes even more convenient, individual and resource-saving when Jardana is integrated into the KNX smart home system. This can be done at any time by simply connecting the KNX cable to the irrigation controller. Once communication has been established, irrigation functions can be expanded with data and logic from the KNX system: Wind alarm from the house weather station, for example, can block the lawn sprinkler. In addition, the watering data can also be shown on the visualisation display on the terrace or in the living room, or the watering can be blocked by push-button.
