Paris’ New Alto Tower Features Otis Double-Deck Elevators

Visitors to the new, 150-meter Alto Tower in Paris’ La Defense district will travel on 12 Otis elevators and two Otis escalators, including eight double-deck Otis SkyRise elevators in a customized system designed to best suit the building’s unique shape. The building opened in October, and its first tenants are expected in 2021. Otis (NYSE: OTIS) is the world’s leading company for elevator and escalator manufacturing, installation and service.

“If you look at the Alto Tower, it has a small footprint at the ground level and expands outward as it climbs. This presented a unique opportunity to showcase our SkyRise double-deck technology, effectively meeting the building’s needs while maximizing leasable space,” said Fabienne Blot, High Rise Operation Manager, Otis France.

Otis’ double-deck technology stacks elevator cars in one hoistway to deliver passengers to adjacent floors at the same time, reducing elevator core space by up to 40 percent. On entering the building, passengers log their destination using Otis’ Compass destination dispatch system. Passengers are then assigned to the proper elevator cab to take them to their destination quickly. To reach and access an upper-deck elevator cab, passengers will ride one of two Otis escalators onsite.

“The work habits, constant communication and similar business culture and values shared by Otis and Bouygues bâtiment Ile de France have created a relationship whereby we anticipate each other’s needs, expect the same things and count on each other to be successful,” said Ludovic Corbeil, Project Director at Bouygues bâtiment Ile de France. “We have the same vision for site organization, and confidence in our forecasts allows us to align in studies, on-site intervention and in the provision of equipment. It's a win-win relationship.”

In total, the building features 10 SkyRise® elevators, including eight double-deck and two duty elevators, two Otis Gen2® elevators and two escalators. The Otis Compass destination dispatch system uses SmartGrouping technology to get passengers to their destinations faster by grouping passengers by floor as well as by zone, resulting in more organized service.

The SkyRise elevators are in a unique configuration with the double-decks grouped in a single bank, providing point-to-point travel and eliminating the need for a transfer floor. The units are equipped with Otis EMS Panorama elevator management system, an easy-to-use interface that gives building managers and owners full visibility into the elevator and escalator equipment.

Otis will also maintain all the equipment in the Alto Tower.
